The following letter appeared in the Rapid city Journal today. Since the Journal doesn't post letters in their on-line edition any more I am posting it here along with my letter in response which was submitted today. (O.M.)
A Journal article (March 28) invites teens and college students to a meeting to organize a group supporting a gay (deviant, degenerate, licentious) and straight youth organization. Will the school districts and college boards allow religious and/or political groups to use their facilities to lure students into their concept of how civilized people should raise their young? No! They forbid such groups. Look up Webster's definition of my words.
When I taught in New York, we were forbidden to even use the schools for Scout meetings because our pledge included God. O.K. Leave out religion and politics. Just look at History as see that gay behavior is a step down from the path leading to the preservation of civilization.
Perhaps we can't stop deviant behavior, but don't allow it to be espoused in our schools. It is already embedded in TV and movies, but parents can teach their families to shun such behavior as it destroys nations rather than inspiring them to grow. Please speak out against allowing gay/straight organizations to use our publicly-funded facilities as such activities they seek to endorse will destroy our civilization as we know it.

Charles West’s letter (4/6/08) claims a Gay, Straight Alliance will destroy civilization. He insists the GSA should be kept out of school. If he’d actually read the articles, he’d see we’re not using school property. By law, students have the right to organize and meet on school property. Our public schools are violating the law. But, we’re not pushing the issue and instead are organizing in a much safer, confidential, nurturing environment.
Allowing students to form a group that helps them to understand and come to terms with how God made them isn’t going to destroy civilization. Mr. West needs to look at the real world. The real threat to civilization is polarizing, divisive religious fanaticism which pits neighbor against neighbor. Using religion to teach people to hate each other and themselves is the real threat.
For too long the Gay community has been victimized by religious intolerance and cut off from healthy expressions of the love that unites us with God. It’s had devastating affects on the LGBT community and the community at large.
Being homosexual isn’t deviant behavior. It’s who we are. Religious intolerance and bigotry is deviant behavior, unchristian and the real threat to a civilized nation.
